A note on the power of money-output causality testsy

چکیده
The role of money and its effects on national output have generated a voluminous amount of literature (Blanchard, 1990; Lucas, 1996; Sargent, 1996). Since Friedman and Schwartz (1963) rekindled the research on the effects of money on aggregate output, numerous studies have aimed to characterize and establish the interactions between money and output. Theoretical models are constructed to show that money can affect output via different channels, including unanticipated monetary shocks, real and nominal rigidities, and menu costs. However, the accumulated empirical results, which are derived from different speci®cations, different sample periods, and data from different countries, still do not give a de®nite answer to the question of whether money affects output. Also, there are diverse opinions on how money affects output. Most empirical studies adopt a vector autoregression (VAR) framework or a modi®ed one to analyze the causal relationship between money and output following the two seminal studies by Sims (1972, 1980). A basic regression equation has output as the dependent variable and lagged output and money as regressors. The basic speci®cation is often augmented with additional macroeconomic variables as controlling variables. The statistical signi®cance of the lagged money variable is used to evaluate the effects of money. Survey of Money- Output Causality: Case Study of Iran, Based on Vector Error Correction Model (VECM)
This study investigated the dynamic relationship between money, prices and output in a multivariate structure of casualty analysis in Iran for the two period of 1969 to 2012 (entire period) and 1989 to 2012 (sub-period). This statistical framework has been projected for situations where causal links may have changed over the sample period. Results of a three-variable Vector Error Correction Mod...
متن کاملInvestigating the Relationship between Money Growth and Inflation in Turkey: A Nonlinear Causality Approach
Theories on the relationship between money and inflation had largely been shaped around the positive relationship and money causality for inflation before the Post-Keynesians. Since the 1980s, this idea emerged that there might be no correlation between money growth and inflation. In the case of existence, the causality is reversed, so money is endogenous somehow. However, practically there is ...
متن کاملThe Endogenous or Exogenous Nature of Money Supply: Case of Iran
This paper investigates the endogenous money supply hypothesis in Iran. To this end, we attempt to find causality directions between bank credits and money aggregates. Utilizing Diks and Panchenko’s (2006) nonparametric Granger causality test for the time series data over the period 2006:04-2018:12 confirms the existence of a significant causality running from bank credits to money aggregates. ...

Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) are a promising candidate to replace conventional metal oxide field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) in the time to come. They have considerable characteristics such as low power consumption and high switching speed. Full adder cell is the main part of the most digital systems as it is building block of subtracter, multiplier, compressor, and other ...
متن کاملMoney and Output: Correlation or Causality? - Economic Review, Third Quarter 1992 - FRB Dallas
At the center of monetary economics is a puzzling observation: innovations (unexpected surges) in the nation's total supply of money are historically correlated with innovations in real output Standard monetary economics can easily explain why an increase in the number of dollars will increase the prices of goods and thus nominal output, the dollar value of the economy's production. But why sho...
